On Saturday, February 22, during the celebration of the Jubilee of Hope, the episcopal ordination of Bishop José Roberto dos Reis took place at the Cathedral of St. Louis Gonzaga in São Luís de Montes Belos, Goiânia, Brazil.
José Roberto dos Reis, of the Passionist Congregation, appointed on Saturday, December 21, 2024, is the first son of the diocese of São Luís de Montes Belos to be called to the episcopate. He will serve as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Goiânia.
Biography and Ecclesiastical Journey
Bishop José Roberto dos Reis was born on April 22, 1977, in São Luís de Montes Belos (GO). He entered the formation community of the Passionist Religious in Goiânia (GO) on February 17, 1997, while already pursuing a degree in Philosophy at UCG/IFITEG, which he completed in 1998. He completed his canonical year of novitiate at the Our Lady of the Rosary formation community in Colombo (PR) in 1999. He made his first religious profession of vows on January 15, 2000, in São Luís de Montes Belos (GO) and his perpetual profession in Goiânia (GO) on February 8, 2003. In the same year, he completed his bachelor’s degree in Theology at UCG/IFITEG. His priestly ordination was on December 7, 2003, in Adelândia (GO).
From January 2004 to July 2010, he was a formator of postulants and parochial vicar at Our Lady Aparecida Parish in Goiânia (GO). From 2005 to 2009, he was coordinator of the team of formators of the Passionist Family of Brazil. From July 2010 to February 2013, he served as parish priest of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Iporá (GO).
In October 2012, he was elected regional superior of the Passionists in the State of Goiás, a position he held until April 2014. From 2014 to 2017, he was master of novices at the Passionist religious community in Ponta Grossa (PR). In 2018, he was a formator of postulants and parochial vicar at Saint Maria Goretti Parish in Cariacica (ES). From 2018 to 2022, he served as the first Consultor of the Province of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. From November 2021 to July 2023, he coordinated the team of formators of the Passionist Family of Brazil.
Since 2019, he has been serving as master of novices and parochial vicar of Holy Cross Parish in São Luís de Montes Belos (GO). He has been a member of the presbyteral council of the diocese of São Luís de Montes Belos since November 2022. On December 4, 2024, he was elected Coordinator of the Passionist Family of Brazil.
